How to Extend Your Pants’ Pockets
The size of pockets in women’s jeans has not kept pace with the ever-growing size of modern cell phones. If you’re like me, you hate keeping your phone in your back pocket or purse, only to have it halfway fall out when you sit down. I decided to fix this by extending the length of my pocket, specifically the one I use for my phone. Now, my phone fits perfectly.
Since there were too many pictures, I made a video instead.
Pro Tip Before You Start
If you’re new to sewing, practice on an old pair of jeans first. This way, you won’t risk ruining your favorite pair. I also found some helpful tips after doing this a few more times.
Important Tips:

If your jeans are tight around the leg, don’t make the pockets too long. It’s better to leave your phone slightly peeking out, so you can easily grab it.

Over time, the bottom of the pocket seam can develop holes. I recommend folding the fabric over at the bottom instead of folding it at the side edge. This method requires fewer stitches and will hold up better.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Before starting, make sure you have the following items:

Jeans with a pocket that is too small

Needle and thread: The thread color doesn’t matter since it won’t show on the outside.

Fabric: Any fabric you have lying around will work, as it won’t be visible. You can even cut up an old t-shirt or bandana.

Scissors

Ruler

Straight pins (or other items like binder clips or tape)

How to Extend Your Pants’ Pockets
Step 2: Plan Before You Start
Turn your jeans inside out and locate the pocket you want to extend. You can only do this on the typical front pocket, where one corner is free (not attached to a seam).
Place your phone in the pocket to decide how much extra length you want to add. For me, adding 2.5 inches worked perfectly, giving enough space for my phone to fit comfortably inside.
Step 3: Cut the Fabric

Measure 2.5 inches from the top of the original pocket and mark it with a pen.

Cut the fabric along this line and discard any excess.

Then, cut the fabric width so it’s slightly longer than double the width of your pocket. You can trim it later for a more precise fit.
Step 4: Cut the Original Pocket (The Point of No Return)
Now comes the tricky part: cutting open the bottom of the old pocket. Take a deep breath—this is irreversible!

I recommend using a stitch ripper for this, but if you don’t have one, scissors will work too. Just be careful and try to preserve the original pocket as much as possible.

Cut along the seam of the pocket, but make sure not to cut it too far down.
Step 5: Prepare for Sewing

Pin the new fabric to the edge of the original pocket. Make sure the rough seam will be visible on the inside when the jeans are turned inside out.

If you don’t have straight pins, you can use mini binder clips or tape, but pins work best for this step.
Step 6: Start Sewing

Thread your needle (double thread is best for strength).

Start stitching the fabric around the pocket, using a loop stitch (where the thread loops around the rough edges).

Don’t sew too close to the edge, or the stitches may slip off when the fabric starts to fray.

Take your time with small, tight stitches, as this will ensure your pocket is sturdy.

Once you get to a pin, remove it to avoid poking yourself!
Step 7: One More Seam!

After finishing the first seam, pin the bottom edge of the pocket and sew the side. You’re almost there—just a little patience required!
Step 8: You’re Done!

Once you’ve finished sewing, tie off the thread and turn the pocket right side out.

Try your jeans on and test out the newly extended pocket. You’re done!

The seam might feel a bit rough at first, but it will soften after a wash or two.
