The difference between sweatshirts and sweaters

I saw a comment from a netizen online that I found quite interesting. Everyone can take a look at it too.

Netizen question:The distinction between sweatshirts and sweaters has become a bit of a never-ending debate among my cousins lately. What really sets sweatshirts apart from sweaters? One cousin argues that sweatshirts are only hoodies, while another believes it depends on the occasion – like whether you’re heading to a casual event or a workout. What’s your take on this?

Netizen A says:I’ve always understood it as sweatshirts are made out of fleece or similar materials and sweaters are knit or crocheted.

Netizen B says:Sweater are made whole out of wool. Sweatshirts are not.

Netizen C says:I was just having this discussion the other day with family in the Midwest! They don’t believe me that people out here (Colorado) don’t differentiate between sweaters and sweatshirts. In Colorado, people generally refer to both as “sweaters.”

Sweatshirts are different. They are usually a tiny knit and lined with fleece on the inside. They are sometimes paired with sweatpants for lounging at home or working out. They don’t have to have a hood, but they are the same type of material as a hoodie. Think of sweatshirts as the ones you wouldn’t hesitate to throw into a washer & dryer.

Sweaters refer to something that’s usually made out of wool. They’re a knit, but the stitches are clearly visible due to the wool. They’re usually nice-looking, and they aren’t seen as casual wear. You can usually wear a sweater to a party, but you would look out of place if you wore a sweatshirt to a party! Most people wouldn’t think of putting a sweater into the dryer. It would pill and shrink.

Here is a basic Google search, to show you how most people differentiate between sweaters and sweatshirts.

Sweatshirts – You can see they are very casual and often have a school or sports team logo on them. You might expect a student to wear one, or someone who is working out or just having a lazy day at home.

Sweater – You can see these are much nicer. Some are argyle. Some are made of a soft, cashmere wool. They’re definitely dressier and something many people would feel comfortable wearing to work or a party.

Netizen D says:I’d say a sweatshirt is sewn and a sweater is knit or crocheted.

Then there’s the material: a sweatshirt is “smooth” on the outside and “fluffy” on the inside, whereas a sweater is… knit or crocheted… the same on both sides (unless it’s lined – but that just adding another layer of fabric).
